Wondering where to get the best glass meal prep containers? This is a list of all my favorites – different sizes, with and without compartments and the best ones for a small budget!
When you’re starting out with meal prep, there is one obvious investment you’ll have to make: Containers.
So. Many. Containers. 🙈
And not only do you need quite a few of them, there’s also a HUGE selection out there on the wild, wild web.
Truth: I put off meal prepping because I just couldn’t decide which containers to buy. And when I finally bought some I let them sit in the cupboard for weeks because I was scared they’d be terrible 😂
I want to keep you from doing that, so I’m sharing my favorite meal prep containers in this handy guide!
Why glass meal prep containers?
First things first: Why do I use glass containers when plastic can be so much cheaper to purchase?
It’s quite simple why I choose glass, actually:
- I don’t trust plastic – even if it’s BPA free, there’s still other stuff in plastic I don’t want in my family’s food.
- glass looks better 😎 – and it’s completely see-through, so I know what’s in every container in my fridge without opening any of them. A big win in my busy working mama life!
- glass cleans better – no lingering smells, no stains from tomato sauce or carrots… Which in turn also makes glass containers last longer than plastic ones. I’d rather spend a little more on glass than always purchasing new plastic tubs!
Now that we’ve established why I buy glass (and why you want to buy glass, too 😉), let’s quit the chatting and cut to the chase:
The Best Glass Meal Prep Containers:
I’m going to list my favorite glass meal prep containers now, which doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the BEST EVER AVAILABLE. Because as we’ve already established, there’s a ton of options out there.
BUT these are my FAVORITE ones I own and use myself all the time.

1. IKEA Containers
Hands down my favorite, and I own SO many of these!
I use the 365+ series containers with the snap-on plastic lids. The containers are durable, come in great sizes and you can purchase the lids separately if they happen to break (I’ve had mine for ages and so far have never had to replace a lid).
What I LOVE about their lids is how easy it is to remove and replace the rubber seal – I take it out every time I put a lid through the dishwasher, because it gets NASTY under there.
I own these in pretty much every size they come in.
2. Prep Naturals 3 Compartment Glass Bento
These are quite handy for when I want to store things together, but separately. Makes sense, right?! 🙈
I have 4 of these and I know I need to buy more!
I’ve been using these for about a year now, and the lids are still perfect – win!
I either store completely prepped meals with components I want to keep away from each other in these.
OR prepped veggies for snacks – I make containers with carrot sticks, cucumber slices and cherry tomatoes. The veggies last for a lot longer if they’re kept in the separate compartments, but I still only have to pull out one container for snack time.
3. Weck Jars
I’m officially obsessed with Weck jars. They are so handy to store all the things – overnight oats, dips, sauces, and even prepped veggies and energy bites!
I do use them mostly for overnight oats for the kids, for fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt cups and to store things like washed grapes and cherry tomatoes.
I way prefer these for moist ingredients over regular mason jars with metal screw on lids – those metal lids get rusty real fast! The Weck jars come with glass lids and snaps, which are super durable and easy to keep clean (I do not add a rubber seal because I’m not canning for eternity, just storing food in the fridge for a few days).

- Tulip Jelly Jars – for kiddie portions of overnight oats, yogurt parfaits, salad dressings etc.
- 1 Liter Tulip Jars – for large batches of energy bites, washed grapes/cherry tomatoes and sliced veggies for stir fries
- 0.25 Liter Mold Jars – for single-serve portions of dips, hummus etc.
4. The Budget Option: Old Jam Jars!
Finally, if you’re on a very tight budget, you can also just use old jam jars for some things!
If you seriously want to meal prep, you’re probably not going to get around purchasing a few rectangular containers.
But for a lot of things – dressings, salsa, overnight oats etc. – you can just use old, thoroughly cleaned jam jars/any old glass jars with a lid you have.
Even though I have a lot of meal prep containers, I still use old jam jars regularly! Especially for adult portions of overnight oats.
But… Which meal prep containers do you NEED?!
There is no use to use a ton of complicated systems of containers for successful meal prep!
When you’re shopping for containers, it’s best to only purchase a few at a time and get a feel for what you really need (depending on your meal prep goals, how many people you prep for etc!).
To me, this is most important when it comes to choosing my glass meal prep containers:
- they need to fit into my fridge
- I want sizes that are useful for my family-style meal prep (eg large ones for lots of chopped veggies for dinner, but also small jars for kiddie snacks/breakfasts)
- enough containers of each type to store our food for 3-4 days
After a few meal prep sessions with a basic set of containers, I started to figure out what else I needed to store all our food during a prep session.
